The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
