The speculation around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
