PSG Defeats Marseille via Spot-Kicks to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now claimed the season-opening trophy on 14 separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable triumph in the match between the French league champions and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele found the net early on.

Yet, the southern French side struck two times late to take a surprise advantage. First, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital equaliser in the final seconds to force the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and the young talent all scored with composure for PSG to complete a convincing penalty win.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the last 13 years.
