European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
