The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
