Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then located many other marked cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations show the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; officials are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior representative stated the incident left him stunned and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in 2020.
